SUNRISE To Produce New Macross Anime

The Macross anime franchise began with 1982’s Super Dimension Fortress Macross series, which was soon followed by 1984’s famous Macross: Do You Remember Love? movie. The most recent entry was 2021’s Macross Delta: ZETTAI LIVE!!!!!! movie, a sequel to 2016’s Macross Delta series which is set decades after the original anime. The franchise features a combination of mecha action, singing, and love triangles.

Some other notable Macross titles include 1994’s Macross 7, 1994’s Macross Plus, 2002’s Macross Zero, and 2008’s Macross Frontier.

Amazon describes the original show as:

Super Dimension Fortress Macross is a Japanese science fiction anime series created by Shoji Kawamori. The show takes place ten years after an alien space ship the size of a city crashed onto South Atalia Island. The space ship was found and reconstructed by humans who turned it into the SDF-1 Macross.

Footage from Super Dimension Fortress Macross and two other anime, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber, were used to form the 1985 North American-targeted cartoon Robotech, which is licensed by Harmony Gold. After decades of legal complications, Japanese advertising agency Big West announced in 2021 that it will release all Macross anime made after 1987 worldwide along with post-1987 Macross games, toys, live performances, and “other content and merchandising.”
