In China, Arena of Valor (also known as Honor of Kings) is already a phenomenon, and it’s not hard out figure out why. It’s essentially a slightly reskinned version of League of Legends, by many accounts, the most popular video game in the world, with some small tweaks to make it more suitable for mobile.
This is possible because its maker, Tencent, is also the owner of Riot Games, the company that gave us LoL. So it had access to the people and tech behind the most successful MOBA ever, which is a pretty good starting point for a project like this one.
In the U.S., where there are already excellent mobile MOBAs like Vainglory, Arena of Valor is playing catch-up, but it could so so quickly. Some of the finest minds covering mobile games are already raving about it, including things like its control scheme, multiple game modes and the vast number of characters it’s offering right from the jump.
And keep in mind, when it comes to a road map for future content, it’s got the best one possible in League. Add it all up and Arena of Valor is a worthy pick for our final Game of the Week for 2017.
